研究員便り「花暦」③

今年は暑い夏でした。本来は９月の中旬ぐらいから開花が見られる曼珠沙華（彼岸花）も、だいぶ開花が遅れた感じです。
今年は開花が遅くネット情報だけでは心許ないので２回偵察に行きましたが、１度目は開花前で花の数が少なく、２度目はだいぶ花が増えた感じでしたが天気が悪く、写真はちょっと残念な感じでした。３度目（10月2日）は天気にも恵まれきれいに咲き揃った所を撮影することができました。
各所（「権現堂公園」「府中郷土の森博物館」など）で見てきましたが、今回の「花暦」では埼玉県日高市「巾着田」の曼珠沙華（彼岸花）の様子を紹介いたします。電車以外のバスや車でのアクセスや場所の詳細については、下記のＨＰをご覧下さい。

「曼珠沙華」と「彼岸花」は同じ花です。曼珠沙華という名前はサンスクリット語で「赤い花」という意味の「manjusaka（マンジュシャカ）」に由来しています。仏教の経典では、おめでたいことがあると天界から赤い花が降るとされている花です。本来は「彼岸花」が正式名称なのですが、「ひだか巾着田」では「曼珠沙華」と呼んでいますので、今回はそちらを使っています。
別名では妖しげな名前もありますが、「葉見ず花見ず」と呼ばれることもある生長が他の植物とは逆に思える特徴的な花で、個体をよく観察しますと不思議な造形のとてもきれいな花ですから、咲いている際には良く観察されると面白いかなと思います。

Researcher's Blog “Flower Calendar” ? Manjusyage

This year has been a hot summer. The red spider lilies, which normally start to bloom around the middle of September, seem to have bloomed quite late.
This year, the flowers bloomed late, so I went to check them out twice, but the first time I went there weren't many flowers yet, and the second time there were more, but the weather was bad, so the photos I took were a bit disappointing. On the third occasion (October 2nd), the weather was fine, so I was able to take some beautiful photos of the flowers in full bloom.
I've seen them at places like the" Prefectural Gongendo Park" and the "Fuchu City Local Forest Museum", but in this edition of the “Flower Calendar”, I'd like to introduce the red spider lilies (Manjusyage) at Kinchakuda in Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture. Manjusyage and Higanbana are the same flower. The name “Manjusyage” comes from the Sanskrit word “Manjusyage”, which means “red flower”. In Buddhist scripture, it is said that when something auspicious happens, red flowers fall from the heavens. The official name is “Higanbana”, but at the Hidaka Kinchakuda, they are called “Manjusyage”, so we are using that name here.
It also has a mysterious name, and it is a distinctive flower that seems to grow in the opposite way to other plants. If you look closely at the individual flowers, you will see that they are very beautiful with a mysterious shape, so I think it would be interesting to observe them closely when they are in bloom.
