Reading The Tale of Genji
As well as “research into ancient calligraphy fragments,” which has been the focus of research on the text to date, scientific equipment has been used to “read” The Tale of Genji to enable multifaceted research into the integration of arts and sciences to read and interpret The Tale of Genji. The scientific approach is also applied to establish techniques for dating ancient calligraphy fragments.
Feeling The Tale of Genji
Restoring the attire of the Heian period in the text of The Tale of Genji, based on the literary knowledge of social customs and culture. In addition, research will be promoted to allow visitors to experience “The Tale of Genji” with the five senses under the expert’s supervision by viewing twelve-layered ceremonial kimono and other attires of the Heian period, enjoying the fragrance of incense, and other experiences.

Project Overview
With its tradition of research into The Tale of Genji, Jissen Women’s University acts as an international center for the implementation of research applying a unique interdisciplinary approach through the integration of arts and science. This project realizes new developments in research into The Tale of Genji and promotes understanding of Japanese culture. With the further dissemination of Japanese culture in the rapidly globalizing society as the theme, the fruits of this project shall be used to produce human resources endowed with a deep understanding of, and ability to communicate Japanese culture, the fount of The Tale of Genji, to establish the university as an education and research institute that makes valuable contributions to the regions around the world.
